Wood Packaging Indexes - 2nd Quarter 2017 CEEB vs HPE

Variation of wooden Pallet Indexes 2nd Quarter 2017

The HPE, the German sawmill purchasing index, rose for the fourth consecutive time (+2.2%), from its low point in the 3rd quarter 2016 and is now tending to catch up with its highs in 2014. In addition to a sign of a stronger economy, we can also see that the cost of sawing from Eastern countries is taking the same path, even accentuating the effects.

The CEEB, the French sawn timber index, follows the same trend as the HPE, with a delay and less marked (+0.8%) since the last 3 evaluations. The upward trend in Girondin and Landais would seem more marked, for maritime pine, with an increase in % almost the double of the national evaluation.

Trends for the coming months

The good performance of the economy suggests that this trend will continue over the coming months, all the more so as some had some difficulties in supplying pallet wood before the summer period, which was accentuated by more sustained demand from manufacturers.

The level of sawn timber and pallet stocks remains low and difficulties have been encountered in rebuilding them in some regions since the recovery.

In 2017, the order books for sawn timber and wooden pallets will be reviewed and the results tend to improve in a sector that has suffered a lot since the 2007 crisis.

If demand remains sustained on this last straight line of the year, forest owners (public and private) should benefit from the effects of supply and demand... ! and the entire value chain could be affected by increases.

Next Indexes

With the Autumn sales, during October 2017, the log auctions will mark the price trend for the first 6 months of the year 2018.

With the next release of the Sawn Indices at the beginning of November 2017, we will be back on track.

Some words on recycled paper.

The price per tonne of recycled paper has also increased significantly since the beginning of the year. From an approximate level at the end of last year of 350 € per tonne, it would have risen between 450 and 500 € per tonne.
